Shardiya Navratri begins with Pratipada of Shukla Paksha of Ashvina month. This nine-day long festival of worship of Shakti Swarupa Maa Durga. In Navratri, there is a law to worship nine different forms of Maa Durga for the entire nine days. There are two manifest Navratri in a year and two Gupt Navratri are celebrated. Chaitra Navratri and Shardiya Navratri falling in the month of Ashvina are called Pravat Navratri. It is called Shardiya Navratri because with it comes the Autumn season.

Significance of Navratri

  • In Gujarat, there is a grand celebration of Garbe on Shardiya Navratri.

  • Ghatsthapana is done from house to house. And the girls are worshipped.

  • Big pandals are decorated in Bengal and grand statues of Maa Durga are placed in them. Durga Puja is organized there.

  • Devotees of Maa Durga worship the nine forms of Maa Shakti in Navratri with full devotion and rituals.

  • On the auspicious occasion of Navratri, fairs are organized in the Shakti Peethas and temples of the Goddess.

  • Devotees of Maa Shakti keep fast for nine days after performing Ghatasthapana at home on Navratri and recite Durga Saptashati.

  • Akhand Ramayana is organized in many places. Ramayana is recited.

  • Jagaran is organized with Havan, and Kirtan in the temples of Mata. Various forms of Maa Durga are decorated.
