The worship of Maa Katyayani on the sixth day of Navratri is very important. This is the sixth form of Maa Shakti. Goddess Parvati took the form of Maa Katyayani to protect the gods and the three from the demon named Mahishasura. Due to killing Mahishasura, the Maa is also called by the name of Mahishasura Mardini. Maa Katyayani is worshiped as the goddess of war. This form, worn for the destruction of the demons, is considered very violent and intimidating.ll.


Katyayani Meaning 

  • Out of the four hands of Maa Katyayani, a lotus flower is in one hand, the other hand holds a sword, the third hand is in Abhaya mudra and the fourth hand blesses her devotees in var mudra.

  • Maa Katyayani is very fond of red color. Maa is also wearing red clothes.

Story of Maa Katyayani

According to a legend in Vamana Purana when a demon named Mahishasura plagued the whole earth and sky with his atrocities. Then all the gods along with Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh appeared in the ashram of Rishi Katyayan to end his sin and tyranny and Rishi Katyayan performed a ritual in which he invoked Maa Shakti and manifested a power beam. Along with Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, all the gods gave their powers to him.

Sage Katyayan wished that Maa Shakti should become his daughter. Then to fulfill the wish of sage Katyayan, Maa Shakti appeared as his daughter. That is why this form of Maa was named Katyayani.

A fierce battle ensued between Maa Katyayani and Mahishasura. Maa Katyayani, armed with weapons, destroyed the army of Mahishasura. Then Mahishasura took the form of Mahisha and attacked Goddess Katyayani, then the Maa beheaded her with a single blow of her sword. Due to the destruction of Mahishasura by the goddess, the goddess is also called by the name of Mahishasura Mardini.


Significance Of 6th Day of Navratri


She was named Katyayani after being born at the place of sage Katyayan. She is also called Shatruhanta. Eight types of achievements are achieved by worshiping them. Worship of Maa Katyayani on the sixth day of Navratri is especially fruitful for unmarried girls. They get a beautiful house and groom.

वन्दे वाञ्छित मनोरथार्थ चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्।

सिंहारूढा चतुर्भुजा कात्यायनी यशस्विनीम्॥

स्वर्णवर्णा आज्ञाचक्र स्थिताम् षष्ठम दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्।

वराभीत करां षगपदधरां कात्यायनसुतां भजामि॥

पटाम्बर परिधानां स्मेरमुखी नानालङ्कार भूषिताम्।

मञ्जीर, हार, केयूर, किङ्किणि, रत्नकुण्डल मण्डिताम्॥

प्रसन्नवदना पल्लवाधरां कान्त कपोलाम् तुगम् कुचाम्।

कमनीयां लावण्यां त्रिवलीविभूषित निम्न नाभिम्॥
