It is believed that Mata Sita was born on Tuesday in Pushya Nakshatra. Goddess Sita was married to Lord Rama. Lord Rama was also born on the Navami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. Sita Jayanti falls a month after Ram Navami in the Hindu calendar. This year, the festival of Ram Navami was celebrated. Mother Janaki was the daughter of King Janak of Mithila, hence this day is also known as Janaki Navami.


It is a religious belief that Mata Sita is the form of Mata Lakshmi. A plowed land was called 'Sita', so King Janak named that girl Sita. On the day of Sita Navami, worship is done in the temples of Lord Rama and Mata Janaki across the country, as well as the temples are decorated with flowers. Bhajan programs are also organized after Ramayana recitation at various places. Some people take out Rath Yatra and chant 'Jai Siya Ram' and sing bhajans.
