Rishi Panchami is a festival celebrated to honor the saints of India. The fast of Rishi Panchami is observed every year on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. The festival of Rishi Panchami is mainly dedicated to seven saints revered as Saptarishi. People also know Rishi Panchami by the name of Guru Panchami. Sage Panchami has special significance in Sanatan Dharma. On this day seven sages are worshipped. It is believed that one who worships and remembers the sages on the day of Rishi Panchami can get freedom from sins.


Importance of Rishi Panchami


There is a belief that on Rishi Panchami, women observe this fast to get the blessings of seven sages, to get rid of the sins committed in their menses, and to fulfill their wishes of happiness, peace, and prosperity. It is believed that by observing the fast of Rishi Panchami, if a woman makes a mistake during menstruation, then the fault of that mistake can be eliminated by observing this fast.

Waking up early in the morning on the day of Panchami, worshiping this fast according to the law brings the welfare of the person. On this day, there is a law to worship the seven sages. The names of these seven sages are – Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaj, Vishwamitra, Gautam, Jamadagni, and Vashistha. These sages used to work for social welfare. Therefore this fast and worship is done in his honor.

According to the mythological texts of Hinduism, any person, especially women, by worshiping the Sapta Rishis on this day, becomes free from all sins. There is an ancient legend that women suffer from menstruating defects. Therefore, where does it go that by observing the fast of Rishi Panchami, one gets freedom from the sins committed during menstruation.

  • On this day everyone wakes up in the morning and takes bath only after getting up.

  • People keep a strict Rishi Panchami fast on this day.

  • All these herbs are specially used for external purification of the body and a mixture of butter, basil, milk, and curd is also drunk to purify one's soul.

  • On this day, devotees worship the Saptarishi of the seven great sages which is the final part of the final aspect of all the rituals.

  • To invoke the presence of all the seven sages, prayers and many sacred things such as flowers and food products are offered. The names of the great Saptarishis are Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishwamitra, Gautam, Jamadagni, and Vasishtha.

  • On this day, vegetarian food should be eaten of fruits, etc. produced from uncultivated land (uncultivated land).
