Sharad Purnima Katha

The full moon falling in the month of Ashwin is also known as Sharad Purnima. The worship of this day is also known as Kojagar Puja in many places. On this day, women keep a fast for the well-being of their children. Therefore, its story is also related to the birth of children and their protection. It is considered necessary to read this story on the day of the fast.

Sharad Purnima Story

There is a mythological story related to Sharad Purnima's fast. A moneylender lived in a city. He had two daughters, who used to observe the fast of Purnima every month. The elder daughter among these two daughters used to observe the fast of Purnima with full rituals. But the younger daughter did not follow the rules of the fast properly. She used to just do the formality in the name of fast.

As soon as the moneylender's daughters grew up, the father got them married. In time, a healthy child was born to the elder daughter. At the same time, the younger daughter had a child, but her child died soon after birth. This happened with the younger daughter two or three times in a row. Then she called a Brahmin and told him her whole story and asked him to tell her the remedy for its treatment.┬а

The Brahmin listened to her and also asked some questions. Then he said that you have observed the full moon fast, but you always observe an incomplete fast. That is why you are not getting the full benefit of the fast. You are feeling guilty of an incomplete fast. The girl became a little sad after listening to the Brahmin.┬а

Then she decided to observe the full moon fast with full rituals. But before the full moon came, she gave birth to a son. The son died as soon as he was born again. Every time such an incident made the younger daughter of the moneylender very sad. She placed the dead body of her son on a stool. She covered it with a cloth in such a way that no one would know. After this, she called her elder sister. She also gave them the same stool to sit on.

As soon as the elder sister started sitting on that stool, a part of her lehenga touched the child and he came alive and started crying. The elder sister got scared after hearing the crying sound of the child. Then she scolded the younger sister. The elder sister got angry and said, what have you done? Do you want to put the stigma of child murder on me? What if the child dies because I sat?

Controlling her sister's anger, the younger sister replied, this child was already dead. Didi, he has been revived just by your touch. Due to the fast and penance, you used to do on every full moon, you have got blessings and you have become pure. Didi, now I will also worship Sharad Purnima fast with rituals like you.

From then on, the younger daughter of the moneylender also started observing Purnima fast according to the rules. After this, the importance and fruit of this fast became famous in the whole city. Just as Mother Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu fulfilled the wishes of the moneylender's daughter and gave her good fortune, in the same way, may your blessings remain on us too.
