Once upon a time, Maharishi Durvasa was returning after meeting Lord Shankar when he met Lord Vishnu. Maharishi Durvasa told him that he was coming to meet Mahadev Ji and after this, he presented a garland of Bilvapatra to Lord Vishnu. But instead of wearing the garland himself, Shri Hari Vishnu ji gave it to his vehicle Garuda. On which Maharishi Durvasa became angry and cursed Lord Vishnu that you are very proud of yourself, go, all your happiness will end, and your wife Lakshmi will be separated from you. You will have to wash your hands of Ksheer Sagar also. After hearing this, Lord Vishnu bowed to Maharishi Durvasa and asked for a solution to get rid of this curse.

You will have to worship Mahadev and Moon on the full moon day, only after which you will be free from the suffering of all the curses. After this Lord Vishnu kept the fast of Uma-Maheshwar as per the advice of Maharishi Durvasa and worshiped Shiva and Moon as per the rituals on the full moon day. Due to this, all his troubles went away and Lord Vishnu regained all his powers.
