The story of Shiva's birth described in Vishnu Purana is perhaps the only description of Lord Shiva's child form. This story is very pleasing. According to this, Brahma needed a child. For this he did penance. Then suddenly a crying child Shiva appeared in his lap. Then Brahma named Shiva 'Rudra' which means 'the one who cries'.

Shiva did not keep quiet even then. So Brahma gave him another name, but Shiva did not like this name and he still did not keep quiet. In this way, to silence Shiva, Brahma gave him 8 names and Shiva became known by 8 names (Rudra, Sharva, Bhava, Ugra, Bhima, Pashupati, Ishan, and Mahadev). According to Shiv Purana these names were written on earth.

There is a mythological story of Vishnu Purana behind Shiva's birth as Brahma's son. According to this, when the entire universe including earth, sky, and underworld was submerged in water, there was no god or creature except Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). Then Lord Vishnu appeared lying on Sheshnag on the surface of the water, and then Brahma appeared from his navel on the stem of the lotus. 

When Brahma-Vishnu was talking about creation, Shiva appeared. Brahma refused to recognize him. Then fearing Shiva's anger, Lord Vishnu gave divine vision to Brahma and reminded him of Shiva. Brahma realized his mistake and apologized to Shiva and asked for his blessings to be born as his son. Shiva accepted Brahma's prayer and granted him this boon. Later, when Brahma started the creation of the universe after killing the Madhu-Kaitabh demons born from the dirt in Vishnu's ears, he needed a child and then he remembered Lord Shiva's boon. So Brahma performed penance and Lord Shiva appeared in his lap in the form of a child.
