According to mythology, Abhimanyu's son King Parikshit was the last king of the Dwapara era. He was very pious. He used to perform many rituals for the welfare of his people. Despite this, he was killed by a sarp named Takshak. Enraged by this, King Parikshit's son Janamejaya started sacrificing snakes in sacrifices to destroy them from the earth. It was the fifth day of Shukla of Shravan month. When Parikshit's son Janamejaya recited the mantra to Takshak along with Indra during his sacrifice in the yajna for the destruction of the serpents, the devotee saved Takshak's life. This date was Panchami itself. In this way, the survival of the snakes was protected. And then, on the day of Nag Panchami, the worship of the Ng devata began.┬а
