Janmashtami is the most important festival among the plethora of festivals in the holy month of Shravan. People celebrate Janmashtami as the birthday of Lord Krishna. According to the beliefs, Lord Krishna was born on the day of Janmashtami. On this day special programs are organized in temples across the country.

Story Of Janmashtami

 

According to legend, when Kansa, the king of Mathura, leaves his sister Devaki to leave her in-laws' house after her marriage, there is a voice from the Akashvani that Kansa will die from Devaki's eighth child. After this Akashvani, Kansa got scared and put his sister Devaki and Vasudev in prison. After this Akashvani, Kansa got scared and put his sister Devaki and Vasudeva in prison. Kansa had destroyed all the seven children of Devaki. Lord Krishna took birth as the eighth child at 12 o'clock at the night. The Lord appeared to Vasudeva and placed Krishna at Nandraj's house in Gokul amidst heavy rain. In the morning all the people of Gokul started celebrating the birth of the son at Nandraj's house. Thus the Lord was born in prison and brought up in the house of Mother Yashoda in the house of Nandraj in Gokul. The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated with devotion and gaiety.

 

Significance Of Janmashtami

 

On the day of Janmashtami, there is a communication of joy and gaiety in the devotional music environment. Fasting is observed on this day. During this festival of Krishna's birth anniversary in the village or city, temples are decorated and the Dahi Handi program is held. At the time of Lord Krishna's birth, Shri Vishnu himself incarnated on earth to destroy sin and dharma, and the Asuras and establish Dharma. This incarnation of Shri Krishna is considered to be a perfect incarnation. The life of Lord Krishna and his teachings in the Gita provides the right direction to life. Remembering Shri Krishna by fasting on the day of Janmashtami is very beneficial. The fast of Janmashtami is called Vratraj. In the Bhavishya Purana, it is mentioned about this fast that premature death, abortion, misfortune, and discord never happen in the house where this fast is observed.

 

Janmashtami Puja

 

On the day of Janmashtami, one should wake up early in the morning and take a bath and wear clean clothes. An Idol or photo of Lord Krishna should be installed. The names Devaki, Vasudeva, Baldev, Nanda, Yashoda, etc. should be chanted in the worship. After noon, the celebration of the birth of Shri Krishna is celebrated. After consecrating Panchamrit to the Lord, offer new clothes and a cradle. After keeping Tulsi in Panchamrit, butter-misery and Panjari should be offered, then after the aarti, distribute the prasad among all the devotees.
