Guruwar Ki Katha - Thursday Vrat Katha

There is a story of ancient times, a very glorious and generous king ruled in a kingdom. He used to keep fast every Thursday and earn virtue by donating to the hungry and poor, but his queen did not like it. She neither kept fast nor donated a penny to anyone and she also forbade the king to do so. Once upon a time, the king had gone to the forest for hunting.┬а

The queen and the maid were at home. At that time Guru Brihaspati Dev came to the king's door in the guise of a sadhu to ask for alms. When the sadhu asked for alms from the queen, she said, "O Sadhu Maharaj! I am fed up with this charity and good deeds. Please tell me some such solution, by which all the wealth gets destroyed and I can live in peace." Then the saint said, "If you have such a desire then do as I say.┬а

On Thursdays, you should plaster the house with cow dung, wash your hair with yellow soil, take a bath while washing your hair, get yourself shaved by the king, eat meat and liquor in your meals, and let the washerman wash your clothes. By doing this for seven Thursdays, all your wealth will be destroyed." Saying this, Brihaspatidev disguised as a saint disappeared.

Only three Thursdays had passed by following the saint's advice and all his wealth was destroyed. The king's family started craving food. Then one day the king said to the queen, O queen, you stay here, I am going to another country because everyone knows me here. That's why I can't do any small work.

Saying this, the king went abroad, there he would cut wood from the forest and bring it and sell it in the city. This is how he starts alive his life.┬а On the other hand, as soon as the king went abroad, the queen and the maid started feeling sad.

Once when the queen and her maid had to go without food for seven days, the queen said to her maid, тАЬO maid! My sister lives in a nearby city, she is very rich, you go to her and bring something so that we can survive a little."

The maid went to the queen's sister. That day was Thursday and Rani's sister was listening to the story of Thursday fast. The maid gave the queen's message to the queen's sister but the queen's elder sister did not give any reply. When the maid did not get any reply from the queen's sister, she became very sad and also got angry. The maid came back and told the queen everything. Hearing this, the queen cursed her fate. On the other hand, the queen's sister thought that my sister's maid had come but I did not talk to her, she must have been very sad because of this.

After listening to the story and completing the puja, she came to her sister's house and said, "Sister, I was fasting on Thursday. Your maid came to my house, but as long as the story was going on, we neither got up nor spoke, so I did not say anything. Tell me why did the maid go?"

The queen said, "Sister, what should I hide from you, we did not even have grains to eat in our house." While saying this, the queen's eyes filled with tears. She told her sister in detail how she and her maid had been starving for the last seven days. The queen's sister said, "Look sister, Lord Brihaspatidev fulfills everyone's wishes. See, maybe there is some grain in your house."

At first, the queen did not believe it, but on the insistence of her sister, she sent her maid inside and she found a pot full of grains. The maid was very surprised to see this. The maid told the queen - O queen, when we do not get food, we keep fast, so why not ask them the method and story of the fast so that we can also keep the fast. Then the queen asked her sister about the Thursday fast.

Her sister said, in the Thursday fast, to worship Lord Vishnu with gram lentils and raisins at the root of the banana tree light a lamp, listen to the fasting story, and eat only yellow food. Brihaspatidev is pleased with this. After explaining the method of fasting and worship, the queen's sister returned to her home.

After seven days, when Thursday came, the queen and the maid kept the fast, went to the stable, and brought gram and jaggery. Then they worshiped the banana root and Lord Vishnu with it. Now both of them were very sad about where would the yellow food come from. Since he had observed a fast, Lord Jupiter was blissful with him. He took the form of an ordinary person and gave beautiful yellow food on two plates to the maid. The maid was happy to get the food and then she ate with the queen.

After this everyone started fasting and worshiping on Thursday. By the grace of Lord Brihaspati, they again got wealth, but the queen again started being lazy like before. Then the maid said, тАЬLook queen, you were lazy like this earlier also, you had trouble in keeping money. Due to this, all the wealth was destroyed and now when you have got wealth by the grace of Lord Brihaspati, you are becoming lazy again."

Explaining to the queen, the maid says that we have got this wealth after great difficulties, so we should do charity, feed hungry people, and spend the money on auspicious works. This will increase the fame of your family, you will attain heaven and your ancestors will be happy. Following the maid's advice, the queen started spending her money on auspicious works, due to which her fame started spreading throughout the whole city. Aarti should be performed with devotion after the Thursday fast story.
