Deepavali Katha
┬а
Once upon a time, a moneylender lived in a forest. His daughter used to offer water to a Peepal tree every day. The Peepal tree on which she used to offer water was the abode of Goddess Lakshmi. One day Goddess Lakshmi said to the moneylender's daughter that she wanted to be friends with her. Hearing this, the moneylender's daughter said that she would ask her father and then tell him.
Later the moneylender's daughter went to her father and told him everything. The next day, the moneylender's daughter agreed to befriend Goddess Lakshmi. Both of them became good friends. One day, Goddess Lakshmi took the moneylender's daughter to her home. Goddess Lakshmi welcomed the moneylender's daughter very well. She fed her many types of food.
When the moneylender's daughter started returning to her home, Goddess Lakshmi asked her when she take her to her home now. Hearing this, the moneylender's daughter asked Goddess Lakshmi to come to her home but she became sad seeing the financial condition of her home. She started fearing whether she would be able to welcome her friend properly. Thinking this, she started feeling sad. The moneylender understood by seeing his daughter's sad face. Then he told his daughter to make a floor with mud and clean it. Light a lamp with four wicks and remember Goddess Lakshmi by taking her name.
Hearing this from her father, she did the same. At the same time, an eagle was flying with a queen's nine-pearl necklace. Suddenly that necklace fell in front of the moneylender's daughter. Then the moneylender's daughter quickly sold it and started preparing food. After a while, Goddess Lakshmi came to the moneylender's daughter's house with Lord Shri Ganesh. The moneylender's daughter served them well. Seeing her service, Goddess Lakshmi was pleased and she removed all her sorrows. In this way, the moneylender and his daughter started living like the rich. There was no dearth of wealth and grains in their life.

Story of Goddess Lakshmi on Deepawali
┬а
This story of Goddess Lakshmi is popular in the context of Deepawali. Once Goddess Lakshmi was wandering on the Amavasya date of Kartik month, and then she lost her way. There was complete darkness everywhere. Everyone on earth was sleeping, and the doors of the house were closed. While wandering, Goddess Lakshmi reached the house of an old woman, who was spinning the charkha. She arranged a bed etc. for Goddess Lakshmi to rest, where Goddess Lakshmi rested.
During this time, that old woman was busy with her work. She fell asleep while working. When she opened her eyes, a palace had been built in place of her hut. Everything except wealth and grains was present in her house. There was no shortage of anything. The old woman could not know when Goddess Lakshmi had left from there. Goddess Lakshmi was pleased with the service of that woman and blessed her. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Prakashotsav at night on Kartik Amavasya every year started. From this day onwards people started keeping the doors of their houses open for the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi.

Story of the King and the Sadhu
┬а
According to another story, once the sadhu thought of enjoying royal pleasures. For this, he started doing penance to please Goddess Lakshmi. On completion of the penance, Goddess Lakshmi was pleased and granted him the desired boon. After receiving the boon, the sadhu reached the king's court climbed the throne, and dropped the king's crown down.
The king saw that a poisonous snake came out from inside the crown and ran away. Seeing this, the king was very happy, because the sadhu had protected the king from the snake. Similarly, once the sadhu asked all the courtiers to immediately go out of the palace, as soon as everyone went out, the palace fell and turned into ruins. The king again praised him and hearing his praise, the sadhu started getting arrogant.
The sadhu realized his mistake, and he pleased Ganapati, on Ganapati being pleased, the king's anger went away, and the sadhu was given his place back. That is why it is said that intelligence is necessary for wealth. This is the reason why wealth and wisdom are worshipped in the form of Lakshmi and Shri Ganesh on Diwali.
