Pradosh Vrat - Sawan Pradosh 2025 Importance

Pradosh Vrat - Sawan Pradosh 2025 Importance

Trayodashi is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha of every month. The fast of Trayodashi of every Paksha is called Pradosh Vrat. The time after sunset and before the arrival of night is called Pradosh Kaal. Lord Shiva is worshiped in this fast. Fasting, worship, etc., are given great importance in Hinduism. It is believed that by keeping a fast with a true heart, a person gets the desired thing. Although there are some fasts or upvaas on every date of every month in Hinduism, Pradosh Vrat is very important among all of them.

According to the scriptures, the evening time of the Trayodashi Tithi of both sides of the month is called Pradosh. It is believed that at the time of Pradosh, Lord Shiva dances in his silver palace situated on Mount Kailash. For this reason, people keep Pradosh fast on this day to please Lord Shiva. By keeping this fast, all troubles and all kinds of defects are eliminated. In Kaliyug, Pradosh Vrat is considered extremely auspicious, and it brings blessings of Lord Shiva. Pradosh Vrat, which falls on all seven days of the week, has special significance. Pradosh Vrat is known by different names in many places. In South India, people know Pradosh as Pradosham.

Pradosh Kaal

Pradosh Vrat will be observed on the Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Sawan month. There are two types of Pradosh Vrat: Shukla Paksha Pradosh and Krishna Paksha Pradosh. If Pradosh Vrat falls on Monday, it is called Som Pradosh; if it falls on Saturday, it is called Shani Pradosh, and when Trayodashi Tithi falls in Pradosh Kaal, it is called Maha Pradosh. This fast is considered very effective for attaining happiness, prosperity, health, and salvation.

Pradosh Vrat Katha

According to a story given in the Skanda Purana, it is a matter of ancient times. A widow, Brahmini, used to go for alms with her son every day and return by evening. One day, when she was returning with alms, she saw a very beautiful child on the riverbank, but the Brahmini did not know who that child was or whose child he was.

The name of that child was Dharmagupta, and he was the prince of the Vidarbha country. The father of that child, who was the king of Vidarbha country, was killed by the enemies in the war, and they took over the kingdom. Dharmagupta's mother also died in grief over her father, and the enemies expelled Dharmagupta from the kingdom. Seeing the condition of the child, the Brahmini adopted him and raised him like her own son.

After a few days, by the grace of God, the Brahmini went to the temple with her two children, where she met Sage Shandilya. Sage Shandilya was a famous sage whose wisdom and wisdom was discussed everywhere.

The sage told the Brahmini about the boy's past, i.e., the death of his parents, on hearing which the Brahmini became very sad. The sage advised the Brahmin and her two sons to observe Pradosh fast and told them about the complete ritual related to it. According to the rules told by the sage, the Brahminis and the children completed the fast, but they did not know what the result of this fast could be.

After a few days, both the boys were roaming in the forest, and then they saw some Gandharva girls there who were extremely beautiful. Prince Dharmagupta was attracted to a Gandharva girl named Anshumati. After some time, both the prince and Anshumati started liking each other, and the girl called the prince to meet her father, Gandharvaraj, for marriage. When the girl's father came to know that the boy was the prince of Vidarbha country, he got them married with the permission of Lord Shiva.

Prince Dharmagupta's life started changing again. He fought hard and re-formed his Gandharva army. The prince regained control over the Vidarbha country.

After some time, he came to know that whatever he had received in the past was the result of the Pradosh fast observed by the Brahmin and Prince Dharmagupta. Pleased with their true worship, Lord Shiva gave them the power to fight every problem in life. Since then, it became a belief in Hinduism that whoever worships Shiva on the day of Pradosh Vrat and listens and reads the story of Pradosh Vrat with concentration, will never have to face any problem or poverty for a hundred births.
