Rules of Mauni Amavasya

    • Donate grains, clothes, sesame, amla, blanket, bed, ghee, and food for the cow in the cow shed.


    • If you can also do a cow donation, gold donation, or land donation on the day of Amavasya.

Story of Mauni Amavasya



It is a matter of ancient times. A Brahmin named Devaswami was living with his family in a city named Kanchipuram. His wife was very virtuous. The Brahmin couple had 7 sons and a daughter. When Devaswami consulted an astrologer for the marriage of his daughter, the astrologer gave sad news to the Brahmin after seeing the position of the planets in the horoscope.


Astrology said that after marriage the girl will become a widow. Hearing this, the Brahmin couple got worried. At the same time, astrology told him the solution to the problem. Astrology advised that by worshiping Soma, the washerwoman of Sinhaldweep, the doshas would be removed. Devaswami called the washerman home and worshiped him. Pleased with the hospitality of the Brahmin, the washerman gave life to the daughter's husband.


Later, when the husband of the Brahmin's daughter died, he was revived by the boon of the washerman. When the virtue of worshiping the washerman waned, the daughter's husband died again. At that time, the Brahmin couple sat under the Peepal tree and worshiped Lord Shri Hari Vishnu on Mauni Amavasya. Due to this everyone became alive again.

On the day of Magh Amavasya, there is a law to keep silent fast, hence it is also called Mauni Amavasya. According to the scriptures, the word 'Mauni' is derived from Muni. On this day sages and saints used to achieve achievements by keeping silent, which is being followed even today. There is a rule to keep silent fast on this day.
