Many people also worship it as the new moon day of bath donation. Along with Shani Jayanti and bathing, women also observe Vat Savitri fast on this day for the long life of their husbands. That's why in North India, Jyestha Amavasya is considered especially auspicious and virtuous.

Jyestha Amavasya story

According to a legend, when Pinddaan was being performed after the death of Maharishi Dadhichi, then his widow wife committed Sati by leaving her 3-year-old child near the Peepal tree, not tolerating his separation. Near the Peepal tree, the child started crying due to hunger and thirst. He ate the fruit that fell from the Peepal tree, and eating that fruit, he started growing. One day Maharishi Narad Muni passed by and he asked the boy about his introduction.

The boy said that he himself did not know who he was. Narad Muni saw Balgriha and told them that he is the son of Maharishi Dadhichi and it was only by emitting thunderbolts from his bones that the deities conquered the asuras. He told that his father had died at the age of 30. When the child asked the reason for the untimely death, Narad Muni told that the child's father was under the influence of Shani Dev. By saying this, Narad Muni named the child Piplad and started teaching him. After this, the child did severe penance of Brahma Vishnu.

Brahma ji was pleased with Piplad's penance and asked him to ask for a boon. Piplad asked for the power to burn anyone just by looking at him. After getting this power, Piplad appealed to Shani Dev. As soon as Shani Dev appeared, he opened his eyes and started burning Shani Dev. Shani Dev's body started burning. All the gods tried to protect Shani Dev but to no avail.

Then on the prayer of the deities, Brahma ji himself appeared in front of Piplad and asked him to ask for two boons instead of one to release Shani Dev. So Piplad asked for 2 boons and said that there should be no influence of Shani Dev in the horoscope of any child of 5 years and no child should be orphaned like Piplad due to the great Dasha of Shani Dev because Piplad had Shani Dasha in his horoscope. Due to this, he was orphaned.

The second boon sought was that whoever offers Arghya to the Peepal tree before the sun rises on the new moon day, Shani Dev should not have any effect on him. Piplad left Shani Dev after getting the boon.
