Rules of Jitiya Vrat
Jitiya Vrat is observed without water. Food, water, etc are not consumed on the day of the fast.
This fast is observed from sunrise of Ashtami to sunrise of Navami.
In this fast, the rules of celibacy are followed.
Satvik food is eaten before the start of the fast. Garlic, onion, meat, alcohol, etc are not consumed in the food.
For the worship of the fast, the idol of Jimutvaahan made of Kush is worshipped. In many places, the female jackal and female eagle idol are used in worship.
Jitiya Vrat Puja Vidhi
Jitiya Vrat is worshipped in the auspicious time. For this, in the auspicious time, install the idol of Jimutvaahan in a water-filled vessel. After that, worship with flowers, garland, Akshat, incense, lamp, mustard oil, chili, and bamboo leaves. Also, offer red-yellow colored cotton. After this, curd, chuda, sindoor, cucumber, keraw, etc. are offered on the idols of female eagles and jackals made from clay and cow dung. A tilak of red vermilion is applied on their foreheads.

According to the story of this fast, King Jimutvahana was a pious and benevolent king in the Satyuga. He decided to live in the forest by handing over his kingdom to his brothers. In the forest, Jimutvahana came to know from an old man of the Naga clan that Garuda takes a snake as food every day. He decided to save the snakes and willingly offered his body to Garuda. When Garuda tried to catch Jimutvahana and take him away, impressed by his bravery and benevolence, Garuda freed him and promised that he would not eat snakes from now on. Through this fast, mothers pray to God for the safety and longevity of their sons.

This story is related to the Mahabharata period. After the death of his father after the Mahabharata war, Ashwatthama was very angry and the fire of revenge was intense inside him, due to which he entered the Pandavas' camp and killed five sleeping people thinking them to be Pandavas, but all of them were the five children of Draupadi. тАЛтАЛDue to this crime of his, Arjuna imprisoned him and snatched his divine gem, as a result of which Ashwatthama used Brahmastra to kill Uttara's unborn child in the womb, which was impossible to make ineffective. It was necessary for Uttara's child to be born, due to which Lord Shri Krishna gave the fruits of all his good deeds to Uttara's unborn child and revived him in the womb itself. Due to dying in the womb and becoming alive, he was named Jivitputrika and later he became King Parikshit. Since then this fast has been observed.
