Due to being absorbed in severe penance for so many years, her complexion had turned black due to incense, dust, and soil. Pleased with Parvati's penance, Lord Shiva promised to accept her as his wife. Then Shiva bathed Goddess Parvati with holy Gangajal. Goddess Parvati became extremely fair after bathing in the holy water of the Ganges. That is why she is also known as Mahagauri.
