The word Dhanteras is explained as Dhan meaning money or fortune, and Teras meaning thirteen. So it means that getting the money by three times more by Goddess Laxmi. This day people buy jewelry, Brass utensils, idols of Lord Ganesha or Goddess Laxmi, idols of tortoises, which bring fortune to the house. They put all this puja alongside sandalwood candles, rangoli near the puja place, and a religious book that has the story and chant of Goddess Laxmi, Ganesh, and Kuber and prays to them for new upcoming beginnings, and fortune in life.
