Talking about marriage rituals, marriage is that sacred bond, which not only unites two people but also teaches them to bear every single responsibility of life. According to the scriptures, the number of seven is considered very important in marriage, because Saat Phere, seven vows, and seven births in marriage, all have a deep connection with marriage in Sanatan Dharma. According to mythological beliefs, marriage is not considered complete without saat phere in Hinduism. So let's know why only saat phere are taken at the time of marriage, what is the importance of this saat phere. 

 

Significance Of Number Seven In Marriage 

 

According to religious scriptures, there are also important things to win in the world, the number of all of them is considered to be seven, like seven colors in a rainbow. Seven seas, seven notes of music, seven sages, seven days, seven cycles, seven actions of man, seven stars, etc., all these things are very important for the world. This is the reason why the number 7 is considered very auspicious in Sanatan Dharma and mythological beliefs. It is such a belief that keeping all these in mind, it is believed to take saat phere in marriage.

 

It is worth noting that in Indian culture, the number 7 is considered very special for human life. 7 notes of music, 7 colors of the rainbow, 7 planets, 7 planes, 7 seas, 7 sages, seven worlds, 7 chakras, 7 horses of the sun, seven rays, seven metals, seven puris, 7 stars, seven islands, 7 days, 7 circumambulations of the temple or idol, etc. have been mentioned.

 

Similarly 7 activities of life ie- defecation, teeth washing, bath, meditation, eating, talking, and sleeping. 7 types of greetings viz- Mother, Father, Guru, God, Sun, Fire, and Guest. Darshan of 7 substances early in the morning - Gorochan, sandalwood, gold, conch, mridang, mirror, and a gem. 7 internal impurities-jealousy, malice, anger, greed, attachment, hatred, and bad thoughts. By removing these impurities, you get these 7 special benefits - happiness, peace, destruction of fear, protection from poison, increase in knowledge, strength, and wisdom. 7 types of baths – Mantra bath, Silent bath, Agni bath, Vayavya bath, Divine bath, Masag bath, and Mental bath. There are 7 metals in the body - juice, blood, flesh, fat, bone, fun, and Venus. 7 virtues- faith, hope, charity, self-control, patience, justice, and sacrifice. 7 Sins- Pride, Greed, Anger, Lust, Jealousy, Laziness, Overeating and 7 Gifts- Prudence, Wisdom, Devotion, Knowledge, Power, and Fear of God.

 

Keeping all this in mind, there is also a practice of taking 7 rounds of fire, which is called 'Saptapadi'. Even in Vedic and mythological belief, 7 numbers are considered complete. It is said that earlier there was a trend of 4 rounds. According to belief, it was the symbol of 4 stages of life- Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. 

 

Why Take Saat Phere In Marriage  

 

According to Marriage Prediction, in Sanatan Dharma, the relation of taking saat phere during the marriage has been considered as a bond of seven births. According to the scriptures, the process of saat phere of the bride and groom in marriage has also been called Saptapadi. It is believed that the bride and groom take saat phere considering fire as a witness so that they can live their married life for the next seven births. Along with this, he also makes promises to maintain the husband-wife relationship with his mind, body, and soul. In Sanatan Dharma, these saat phere have been considered the main pillar of the stability of marriage. 

 

Why Do We Take 7 Vows During The Marriage? 

 

You must have seen that saat phere are taken at the time of marriage and along with that there is a promise with each round. Those vows take the vow of the bride and groom to be together in every way throughout their life. In Sanatan Dharma, the importance of saat phere and seven words is to unite the souls and physical of two people. This is called the sacred bond of marriage. It is believed that because of these saat phere and seven promises, the bride and groom stay together for seven births. 

 

Saat Phere or Saptapadi 

 

In Hinduism, 16 sacraments are considered the most important part of life. The marriage ceremony is not considered complete until 7 rounds are completed in the marriage. Neither one round less nor one more. In this process, both take 7 rounds which is also called 'Saptapadi'. These saat phere or steps are taken with 7 words. Every round has a promise that the husband and wife promise to keep together for the rest of their lives. These 7 rounds are the main pillars of the stability of Hindu marriage. By taking 7 rounds of fire and considering the pole star as a witness, two bodies, minds, and souls get tied in a holy bond.
