Lord Parashurama was born to the sage Jamadagni. Though he was a Brahmin, he always carried an ax which he got from Lord Shiva after pleasing him with his meditation. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Mahadeva and from whom he learned the methods of warfare and other skills. However, the son of a brahmin, Parashurama had a great love for weapons and possessed Kshatriya (warrior) traits. She is also known as 'Brahma-Kshatriya' - one who has both Brahmin and Kshatriya qualities (since her mother was the daughter of a Kshatriya and her father was a Brahmin).

Jamadagni had a divine cow named Kamadhenu which was a wish-fulfilling cow. King Kartavirya Arjuna wanted the cow for himself and took it forcefully. Enraged by this, Parashurama killed the king with his axe. Sage Jamadagni was furious because it was not auspicious for a Brahmin to kill a warrior, so he sent Parashurama on a pilgrimage to wash away his victory. When he returned he found that the sons of Kartavirya had killed his father. In retaliation, Parashurama crushed the Gupta ruler and his entire family and resolved to destroy every malevolent warrior on earth.

In another incident, Jamadagni asked Parashurama to kill his mother. His mother Renuka was a devoted wife and used to go daily to get water from the river. One day, some Gandharvas were going to the river and some temptation arose among them. Sage Jamadagni came to know of this because of his yogic powers and asked Parashurama to kill him. Parashurama being very obedient to his father went further and killed his mother without any delay. Very blissful with this, his father asked him what he wanted. Parashurama asked for a boon to bring back his mother.
