Narasimha Jayanti Story
According to the Bhagavata Purana, a great sage named Kashyap had a wife named 'Diti', and they had two sons named Hiranyakashipu and Harinaksha. Lord Vishnu, in his previous incarnation as Varaha (third incarnation,n), had killed the evil demon Hiranyaka to protect mankind and the earth. His brother Hiranyakashipu was very angry at his brother's death, hated Vishnu, and decided to take revenge. He prayed fervently to Lord Brahma and received his blessings.
Hiranyakashipu requested Lord Brahma to grant him an extraordinary boon- "I will not die inside a dwelling or outside a dwelling, during the day or at night, on the ground or in the sky, neither by any weapon, nor by any man, nor by any means.
Hiranyakashyap had a son named Prahlad. Despite being born in a family of demons, Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu became angry and decided to kill his son. Hiranyakashyap's many attacks on Prahlad failed due to Lord Vishnu's mystical power. Feeling helpless, Hiranyakashyap grabbed Prahlad and angrily asked him, "Where is your Lord?" And slammed his weapon on a nearby column and asked Prahlada to show him his Lord Vishnu.
Only then, Lord Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Vishnu, came out from the same pillar along with the same pillar. Lord Vishnu incarnated as a half-man and char Narasimha avatar, to satisfy the boon given by Lord Brahma. Lord Narasimha then took Hiranyakashipu in his lap and, using his sharp nails (neither conscious nor inanimate) as a weapon, he slayed the demon king.
