Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Story



According to the legend, Kartikeya was very angry with Lord Ganesha's first marriage, and he went to Kronch Kailash, angry with everyone. Many gods also tried to bring Kartikeya back. Kartikeya rejected everyone's prayers. Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva were very saddened by the story of their son's separation, and then both of them went to Kronch Mountain themselves. On hearing the advent of his mother and father, Kartikeya went in addition away. Finally, in the desire to see his son, Lord Shiva took the form of light and sat on the same mountain. The Shivalinga that appeared there that day became famous as Mallikarjun Jyotirlinga.


In the scriptures, due to their love for their son, Shiva and Parvati go to see Kartikeya on every festival. It is stated that Lord Shiva himself comes on the day of Amavasya, and Mother Parvati comes on the day of Purnima.


It is said that near this mountain was the capital of a king named Chandragupta. Once, his daughter ran away from her parents' palace to escape some calamity and went to this mountain. After going there, she started living her life with milk and roots with the local cowherds. This princess had a black cow. Whose milk was milked daily by someone? One day, she saw a thief milking the cow. When she ran to kill him in anger, she found nothing except a Shivling on reaching near the cow. Later, the princess, a devotee of Lord Shiva, built a temple at that place. Since then, Lord Mallikarjuna became established there.

The Satavahanas, the first dynasty of South India, have left their clear mark in the form of inscriptions at Srisailam. The establishment of the temple was celebrated by the people. In the name of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy, the Satavahana king Satakarni named himself Mallana. In the Nasik Prashasti of Pulumavi of the 2nd century AD, you can see the earliest reference to the Srisailam hill. Historians also argue about linking the origin of the temple to the rule of the Pallavas and the expansion of the reign of the Reddy kings; Prolaya Varma and Anvema Reddy are said to have built roads and mandapas to the temple.


King Harihara II of the fourteenth-century Vijayanagara dynasty built the steps of Pathala Ganga. Chandrashekhar, minister of Krishnadevaraya, built the mandapas of the temple. Later, the Nawabs, Mughals, and then the British took over the administration, and the temple area came under them. я╗┐In 1929, the British appointed a committee to manage the temple. Later in 1949, the temple was put under the administration of the Endowment Department. In later years, the construction of the gopuram in the north was authorized by Chhatrapati Shivaji. From the Satavahana dynasty, evidence of inscriptions shows that the temple has existed since the 2nd century.

Chant "рдУрдо рдирдордГ рд╢рд┐рд╡рд╛рдп", "реР рдорд▓реНрд▓рд┐рдХрд╛рд░реНрдЬреБрди рдирдордГ", or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra during the puja. Reciting Shiva Tandava Stotra, Lingashtakam, or Mallikarjuna Ashtak is very fruitful. Circumambulate Lord Shiva in one direction (leaving the south direction). With both hands folded, pray: "O Mallikarjuna, remove all sorrows, diseases, and fears from my life and give me knowledge, strength, and devotion."
