Meaning of Mahamrityunjay Mantra

Tryambakam: One with three eyes (Karmakaraka)

Yajamahe: We worship, and honor, our reverends.

Sugandhim: Sweet-smelling, fragrant (karmic)

Prushti: The fullness of a well-nourished state, a flourishing, prosperous life.

Vardhanam: One who nourishes, gives strength, enhancer (in health, wealth, happiness); One who delights, rejoices and bestows health, A good gardener.

Urvarukam: Cucumber (worker).

Bandhana: Stem (of gourd); ("From the stem" the fifth inflection - actually longer than the ending -the which converts via sandhi).

Origin of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

According to the legend, once the sage Mrikandu did severe penance to Lord Shiva to get a child. Pleased with the austerity of his devotee, Lord Shiva granted sage Mrikandu a boon to have children as per his wish, but Lord Shiva told sage Mrikandu that this son would be short-lived. After some time sage Mrikandu got a son. After the birth of the son, the sages told him that the age of this child would be only 16 years. Hearing this, sage Mrikandu became sad.

Seeing her husband surrounded by anxiety, when sage Mrikandu's wife asked him the reason for his grief, she told the whole story. On this, his wife said that if there is the grace of Shiva, then he will also postpone this legislation. The sage named his son Markandeya and also gave him the Shiva mantra. Markandeya always used to be absorbed in Shiva devotion. Time passed and Markandeya grew up. When the time came near, sage Mrikandu told his short life to his son Markandeya. Along with this, he said that if Shivji wants, he will postpone it.

Then in order to remove the sorrow of his parents, Markandeya started worshiping Shiva to get the boon of longevity from Shiva. For the worship of Shiva, Markandeya composed the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and started chanting it unbrokenly while sitting in the Shiva temple.

When Markandeya's age was complete, then the eunuchs came to take his life, but at that time Markandeya was absorbed in the penance of Lord Shiva. Seeing this, the eunuchs went back to Yamraj and came back and told the whole thing. Then Yamraj himself came to take the life of MarkandeyaJi. As soon as he put his loop on him to take the life of Markandeya, the child Markandeya clung to the Shivling.

In such a situation, the loop accidentally fell on the Shivling. Lord Shiva became very angry at Yamraj's aggression and Lord Shiva appeared before Yamraj to protect his devotee, then Yama Dev reminded him of the rule of law, but Shiva changed the law by giving Markandeya a boon of longevity.

In this way, Markandeya composed the Mahamrityunjaya mantra while being absorbed in the devotion of Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva saved his life from Yamraj. This is the reason why the Mahamrityunjaya mantra is called the death-averting mantra.
