Importance of Shravan Month

It is believed that Shravan Nakshatra or stars rule the sky on the full moon day or at any time during this month and hence the name of the month is derived from the constellation.

The history behind the month of Shravan is that according to Hindu mythology, when the gods and demons were churning the ocean, poison came out in the month of Shravan. Like all the gifts of the sea, this too had to be accepted by all. To help the gods, Lord Shiva consumed the poison – even though he was not part of the churning – and held it down his throat, turning his throat blue. The grateful deities offered water to nullify the effect of the poison and devotees still offer water and milk to the Shivling with the same faith.
