Shravan also known as the month of Sawan, is considered one of the holiest months in the Hindu calendar. But have you ever wondered why this month is so important in Hinduism? The history behind the month of Shravan is that according to Hindu mythology, when the gods and demons were churning the ocean, poison came out in the month of Shravan. To help the gods, Lord Shiva consumed the poison тАУ even though he was not part of the churning тАУ and held it down his throat, turning his throat blue. The grateful deities offered water to nullify the effect of the poison and devotees still offer water and milk to the Shivling with the same faith.

Shravan Month Fasting and Rituals

Shravan Mondays are considered extremely auspicious for fasting, with a large number of followers fasting on each Monday of the Shravan period for a total of 16 Mondays. Thereafter, all Tuesdays of this month are devoted to the worship of Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. Women observe fast on Tuesdays of Shravan month and worship Goddess Parvati. This fast is also called Mangala Gauri Vrat. Many important festivals also come in the month of Shravan.

Auspicious fasting in Shravan to please Lord Shiva This month is very auspicious not only for fasting but also for other religious rituals. Getting up early in the morning to go to the Shiva temple and anointing Lord Shiva Linga with a mixture of milk, ghee, curd, and Gangajal, in Panchamrit are the small things that are observed in Sawan. Bilvapatra is an auspicious religious ritual. Following this practice in this holy month brings health, happiness, and prosperity. Rudraksha is the symbol of Lord Shiva and wearing Rudraksha in Sawan is also considered auspicious. Devotees of Lord Shiva must make sure to wear Rudraksha during this time of the month of Shravan to please him and seek his blessings. Apart from this, offering Lord Shiva with Vibhuti Panchamrit, Bilva Patra, Ganges water, Dhatura, honey, or sugar, brings happiness and peace in the life of the devotee.
