In Mahalakshmi Vrat, take a bath every morning and wear clean clothes. Take a vow to fast in front of Mahalakshmi. Install the idol of Lakshmi ji at the place of worship. Offer fruits, flowers, rice, turmeric, kumkum, lamps, incense sticks, and sweets to them. After this, sit there and recite Mahalakshmi Stotra. Listen to the story of Mahalakshmi Vrat. According to the scriptures, the devotee observing Mahalakshmi Vrat should not consume tamasic things for 16 days. Take special care of cleanliness in the house. Light a lamp in front of Maa Lakshmi every day and worship her properly. Those who observe this fast also have to avoid sour things. After worshiping Lakshmi ji, 16 bales of Durva grass should be soaked in water and sprinkled on the body. Avoid anger and ego in these 16 days. Do not insult anyone. Control your speech.

A poor Brahmin lived in a village. Who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu? Once pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and asked him for a boon. After listening to the Lord, the Brahmin wished that Lakshmi ji should reside in his house. After listening to the Brahmin's wish, Lord Vishnu said that, near the temple of your village, a woman makes cow dung cakes. She is Goddess Lakshmi, invite that lady to come to your home for Goddess Lakshmi.


As per the instructions of Lord Vishnu, Brahmin did the same. He went to the woman making cow dung cakes i.e. Goddess Lakshmi and invited her to come home. After listening to his words, Goddess Lakshmi understood that this work is of Lord Vishnu. After this, he told the Brahmin to observe a fast for Mahalakshmi for 16 days and offer water to the moon at night on the 16th day. By doing this your desire will be fulfilled. After listening to the Goddess, the Brahmin observed the Mahalakshmi fast according to the rituals and on the 16th day Lakshmi ji kept her word. Since then, the Mahalakshmi fast started being observed by the people of India.
