Dhanteras Katha
Dhanteras is celebrated with full faith and belief on the Trayodashi date of Kartik Krishna Paksha. On this day, there is a belief in worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Kuber, the god of wealth, apart from Dhanvantari. Apart from the story of Dhanvantari's birth, another story is popular regarding the celebration of this day.
Dhanteras Story
It is said that once Lord Vishnu was coming to roam in the mortal world, then Lakshmi Ji also urged him to come with him. Then Vishnu ji said that if you agree with me then come. Then Lakshmi ji agreed to his words and came to earth with Lord Vishnu. After some time, reaching a place, Lord Vishnu told Lakshmi ji that you stay here till I came. I am going towards the south direction, you do not come there. When Vishnu ji left, Lakshmi ji became curious about what was such a mystery in the south direction that I had been forbidden and God himself went there.
Lakshmi ji could not resist and as soon as God moved forward, Lakshmi ji also followed him. After going a little further, she saw a mustard field in which there were many flowers. Seeing the beauty of mustard, she was mesmerized and after plucking flowers and adorning herself, she moved ahead. Going further, Lakshmi ji plucked sugarcane from a sugarcane field and started sucking its juice.
At the same time, Vishnu ji came, and seeing this, he got angry at Lakshmi ji and cursed her that I had forbidden you to come here, but you did not listen to me and committed the crime of stealing from the farmer. Now for this crime, you will have to serve this farmer for 12 years. Saying this, God left them and went to Kshirsagar and Goddess Lakshmi started living in the house of that poor farmer.
One day Lakshmi ji told the farmer's wife that after taking a bath, first worship this Lakshmi Devi made by me, then cook food, then you will get whatever you ask for. The farmer's wife did the same. Due to the effect of worship and the grace of Lakshmi, from the very next day, the farmer's house was filled with food, money, gems, gold, etc. Lakshmi filled the farmer with wealth and grains. The farmer spent 12 years happily. Then after 12 years, Lakshmi got ready to leave.
When Vishnu ji came to take Lakshmi, the farmer refused to send her. Then God said to the farmer, who let her go, she is fickle, she does not stay anywhere. Even great people could not stop her. She was under my curse, that is why she was serving you for 12 years. Your 12 years of service period is over. The farmer stubbornly said, no, now I will not let Lakshmi go.
Then Lakshmi ji said, O farmer, if you want to stop me then do as I say. Tomorrow is Teeras. Tomorrow you clean the house and whitewash it. Light a ghee lamp at night and worship me in the evening and keep a copper pot filled with money for me, I will reside in that pot. But I will not be visible to you at the time of worship. With this one day's worship, I will not go out of your house for the whole year. Saying this, she spread in all the ten directions with the light of the lamps. The next day the farmer worshipped Goddess Lakshmi as per the story. His house was filled with wealth and grains. For this reason, Goddess Lakshmi started being worshipped on Teeras every year.
