Amalaki Ekadashi Importance, Story, Rituals, And Fasting

Amalaki means gooseberry. According to the Padma Purana, the Indian gooseberry tree is considered the favorite of Lord Vishnu. It is also believed that Shri Hari and Goddess Lakshmi reside in this tree. Because of this on the day of Amalaki Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is worshiped sitting under the Amla tree.

Ekadashi of Phalgun month's Shukla Paksha is known as Amalaki Ekadashi. It is also known as Amla Ekadashi and Rangbharni Ekadashi. Amla tree is worshiped along with Lord Vishnu during this fast. Amalaki Ekadashi falls between Mahashivaratri and Holi. According to the English calendar, this fast falls in the month of February or March. Breaking the fast of Ekadashi is called Parana. Parana is performed after sunrise on the previous day of the Ekadashi fast. It is very important to fast on Ekadashi before the end of Dwadashi Tithi. If Dwadashi Tithi ends before sunrise, then Ekadashi fast is observed only after sunrise. Not doing Paran on Dwadashi Tithi is like committing a sin.

Amala Ekadashi story

According to mythology, Lord Brahma was born from the navel of Lord Vishnu to create this universe. He wanted to know about himself. They wanted to know how they originated. To know the answers to these questions, Brahma ji started the penance of Lord Vishnu. After a long time, pleased with his penance, Lord Vishnu appeared to him.

Brahma ji got emotional after seeing him and tears flowed from his eyes. Amla tree was born from his tears. Then pleased with his penance, Lord Vishnu said that the gooseberry tree has been born from your tears, and because of this the tree and its fruit will be very dear to him. According to another story, there was a king who was a hunter in his previous birth. Once on the day of Amalaki Ekadashi, when all the people were doing bhajans and worship in the temple after fasting on Ekadashi, then he was hiding outside the temple for the purpose of stealing in the temple. He was waiting for the people to leave while watching the worship going on in the temple. The next morning the hunter went home. In this way, unknowingly the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi was done by the hunter. After some time the hunter died and was born into a royal family and became the king of a large kingdom. This happened because of the Ekadashi fast observed by him in his previous birth.
